Eating for Pleasure

How often do you grab something to eat only for the purpose of satisfying a bad emotion?  Do you eat crap food after a crap day?  Pleasurable eating can be both healthy and enjoyable.

We have to stop the cycle of rewarding our day negatively with negative food. Bad day at work, go home and have a drink or some wine.   Break up with your boyfriend/girlfriend eat ice cream.  We all have done it. But why?   because at the time it brought us some sort of emotional pleasure that took us away from the pain we were feeling.  If this is a one time thing, that is ok, if it continues daily it leads to being overweight and having health issues.

We have to start understanding the root cause of our issues and not remedy them with food.  Stop for a moment when reaching for destructive food and say how will this serve my body. Will it help with what is bothering me?   If I do still want to have my favorite things in my life, how could I make them healthier for me.

Be mindful and take care of your body,

A Plant Based Diet

I often get asked how I eat.  I refrain from going into large details about my eating because I do not want others to think they have to eat just like me to be successful. I eat based on my needs and goals and it has, so far been working. I do fine tune here and there and have the periods of time I get off track just like others.

I refer to myself as Paleo-Vegan. Which if you know either of those “diets” its a bit of a contradiction to say that.  I eat very little meat, consume ghee and collagen, but also eat a whole lot of veggies and healthy fats.  I do have an internal struggle with flesh animals and eating them. I do not enjoy preparing them. I drink bone broth but do not make it myself because the bones gross me out.  I always choose quality or local but still on occasion, think deeper about the animal and that I am eating an animal and it grosses me out.  I also enjoy honey and bee pollen which is not consumed by most vegans.

I grew up on a farm in Indiana and my parents still raise sheep. We would eat lamb on many occasions and it was always on the table on holidays.  I knew, yet really didn’t make the connection, that the lamb I might have showed for 4-H was the lamb on my plate.  I think that is how we become de-synthesized and able to consume so much meat as a culture. We do not make the connection.  It has often been said that we can be fine killing a cow but no way we would think about eating our dog.  Why is that?

Now I am not here to convince you to be vegan or vegetarian. But I do want to manipulate you into eating more plants, superfoods, and herbs. :)    Being plant based means that bulk of your diet are plants.   Veggies, legumes, fruits, and anything that is grown on the earth.  Do you currently fall into this category?

I will often say I could be Vegan and eat potato chips with every meal. I would not be eating  animal products.  Would that be healthy? No way!   Now, a plant based vegan says a lot. It is saying you are getting tons of plants, vitamins and minerals (hopefully).

There is always an exception based on goals and health concerns.  Those are things I evaluate when guiding a client on their eating style.  Our eating might evolve as our health does.   Bottom line, you will not get “sicker” eating plants.

Are you a plant based eater?

Combat Allergies

Oh the dreaded Allergies.  I am fortunate to not have them. When I moved to Tennessee in 1999 to go to college so many people warned me I would get them. They said they are the worst.   I am glad I am not speaking first hand, but I have many friends who get them along with people I see posting on Facebook.  I would like to offer you some simple tips and a little more understanding on why they keep happening and how you can prevent them.

Sneezing and stuffy nose is a response the body is giving you to say, "Hey you have something in you I need to blow out" or "Hey you are dried out so Im going to give you some extra mucus or lubricant to keep you from being dry inside"   When it is saying that and your body can' t balance, the sneezing will not stop and your nose will become to full of mucus and snot.

What we do want, is for our immune system to respond and offer us relief with just a sneeze and then the rest is fought off because our immune system is strong.  Our immune system being strong will bring us back to our gut. Our colon/gut is the center for all disease or discomfort and building that up allows our immune system to kick in and for allergies to move on through.

Simple tips for building the immune system and helping allergies:

Remove dairy from your diet. Yes I know, cheese is your happy place, or a glass of milk makes you feel good. Unfortunately dairy is mucus causing and leads to inflammation. This inflammation can be in your lungs etc.  If we are having mucus stuck in our nose, you can be sure it is present in our gut.

Add in a probiotic: Choose a quality probiotic.  Capsules need to be more than 5 strands of bacteria. Liquid, I enjoy inner-Eco, I can find it at Whole Foods or online.  Begin eating foods that contain probiotics, like keifer water, kombucha, sauerkraut, and kimchi.  Adding in good bacteria will aid in fighting the bad and also boost your immune system. You can use a probiotic powder on your skin as a facial or also on a sore to help it heal.

Use ear oil:  I have a post dedicated to ear oil. It will prevent drying and mucus build up in your ears and nose.

Use local honey or bee pollen: If you have the option to get honey or bee pollen no more than a 50 mile radius from your home it will aid in your body fighting off allergies.  Do not choose it just when allergies are present, use both year around.   Bee Pollen is also great for balancing blood sugar, boosting libido and increasing energy.

Allergies are not fun, but you do not have to be subject to them.  Stay consistent with the above and they will be greatly improved.

Cryotherapy, I froze my butt off!

in the middle of my session.

in the middle of my session.

I have been studying cold therapy for a while. I have listened to Tony Robbins talk about his morning routine of submerging in cold water and then into warm. He does this to train his body to respond to cold with a strengthened immune system.   I have also heard of Ice Man Hof, and have had a friend train with him.

I have attempted to sit in our sauna and then get in an ice bath at home. I was a wimp.   Then I heard of cryotherapy. I had athletic friends that use it for recovery with running and could not wait to try.

Benefits:  Improved recovery time, decrease in inflammation, weight loss, boost in metabolism, adrenaline increase and much more.  Along with the above, I wanted to use it for mind training. Allowing my mind to have more control over the "pain" of the cold.  You are not in long enough for it to be detrimental to your body and this was my first session. I gave into the cold and It sucked.

A client of mine and I went to Music City Cryotherapy.  When we walked in there was a camera crew, and I noticed a TV personality on the couch. This was the place to be haha. I chose to also have my first ever Periscope for this event. I am not good at filming myself but I am trying to come out of my shell.   We had to wait a while for our session due to the filming of the TV show.  They were awesome and offered us our session due to the wait.    I went first. You get naked with only gloves and socks.  Now I thought you had to wear underwear, which I do not, so I brought some random hanes I had. I also kept my sports bra on.

They started me up and it was COLDDDD. Now remember the mind training? Well , I think because I was with a friend, had unexpected people to wait on, I was fired up and allowed the cold to control me. I wanted to quit, which is NOT like me.  If it were not for Periscope I might have jumped out. It felt like little pokes all over your skin. You could for sure feel your body trying to reverse the cold.

After I felt AMAZING.  Once my body began to regulate, I had so much energy, I was just jumping around.  I had minor anxiety for the last couple days, and although I was energized i was also relaxed inside, if that makes sense.  My anxiety is gone and it is 4 hours later. My client is still feeling energized and I can not wait to go back (next week). What I will do next week is go in more relaxed, do some deep breathing and work on the mind control.

I highly recommend this for anyone.  Go in with the idea that it will give you what you need.  Also enjoy the adrenaline rush!
